The Police in Abia State on Monday remanded 60 suspected members of the Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) after they were charged to court following the group’s alleged clashes with security agents in the South East.
The defendants who were not asked about a plea did not deny membership of IPOB and are facing charges related to violent attacks, illegal assembly, attempted murder and terrorism.
Spokesman for Abia Police Command, Geoffrey Ogbonna disclosed to newsmen that said the case which is before Magistrates Courts in Umuahia was adjourned until October 25.
Earlier last week, seven people suspected to be IPOB members were remanded in custody in Aba, the commercial center of Abia State bringing the total number being remanded to 67 who are said to have clashed with security agencies personnel.
Recall that IPOB has been agitating for an independent state of Biafra for the Igbo people who dominate the South Eastern part of Nigeria.
Towards containing this agitation and the alleged violence associated with it, the Nigerian Army earlier this month flagged off Operation Python Dance 2 to restore peace and security in South East.
