Mercy Corps, EU Funded BRICC hands over Catering/Tailoring Equipment to Yobe State.

As part of the Building Resilience in Complex Crisis (BRICC) consortium, Mercy Corps, in collaboration with the Yobe State Government, Private Sector and Civil Society partners on Tuesday handed over catering and tailoring skills equipment to Yobe State through the Ministry of Women Affairs in Damaturu.

It is a 36 months project aimed at building the resilience of 26,875 households, increasing their ability to cope with the shocks and stresses of conflict, climate change and complex crisis, and their ability to transform the underlying causal dynamics to reduce the risk of future conflict.

In his opening remarks during the presentation, Hugh Briggs, Field Manager (Yobe) Mercy Corps revealed that the 36 months BRICC Programme is building the absorptive and adaptive resilience capacities of men, women, male youth, and female youth whilst engaging with communities and local leadership to create the conditions to facilitate systemic change. 

“We are supporting Yobe State government to develop social protection policy to address the needs of vulnerable population in Yobe through the Ministry of Women Affairs” he said.

Also, the BRICC program is restoring/creating community economic assets & water points while seeing to it that vulnerable and conflict-affected households meet their basic needs, increase savings, and have improved access to basic health.

WASH and vulnerable and conflict-affected households have restored and improved livelihoods that are more resilient to conflict and climate shocks and stresses.

“Through the EU funded BRICC program, Mercy Corps is supporting the Women Development Center under Yobe State Ministry of Women Affairs. 

The Women Development Center is situated at Bukar Ali Primary School Damaturu LGA, Yobe State. Purpose of the supporting the Women Development Center: 

As part of our activities, we would be supporting selected vocational skills training centers in the state in order to train youths on different vocational skills”.

‘Mercy Corps, funded by EU is today handing over the Catering equipment to Yobe State Ministry of Women Affairs for full utilization.

 The Catering equipment handed over include syrum double door chest deep freezer, Hisense double door standing refrigerator, maxi gas cooker, Blenders, Tower pots, locally made akara frying pan, set of locally made masa frying pan.

Others include aluminum pots, cookers, knives, cooking spoons for frying, set of frying pan, plastic brackets, basins, aluminum pots, wooden chopping board, polling pin, plastic containers and sewing machine.

Responding, the Permanent Secretary Yobe State Ministry of Women Affairs, Tonga Betara thanked the European union for the support which according to him will go a long way in easing the sufferings of the Youths and Women in the communities adding, “this Intervention will develop a robust policy of addressing the needs of the vulnerable persons in the state.”

He applauded the Mercy Corps EU Funded BRICC programme of food and security in agriculture that engaged Women and Youths.

According to him, this is a driver for them to address conflicts and other social vices among themselves.

While giving the closing remarks, the Director of Women Affairs, Hajiya Fatsuma Hassan Yusuf also commended the EU Funded BRICC programme saying “we thank you so much for the support and cooperation, we assure you we will make judicious use of the items.”
