The Police in Enugu State on Saturday rescued abducted Prof. Nduka Eya unhurt while one of the suspects involved in his kidnap was arrested.

The command also recovered a locally made gun from the arrested suspect.

The Enugu-based Prof. Eya was abducted by unknown gunmen on Thursday evening at Ezillo Street, Independence Layout, Enugu.

The Command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, in a statement Saturday in Enugu said the rescue was possible through a joint operation with sister security agencies in the state.

Amaraizu said that Eya was rescued on Saturday at about 6:30 a.m.

“The operatives of the Anti-Kidnap Unit of the command through intelligence information and coordinated operation conducted in the early hours of Saturday, Aug. 5, rescued Prof. Nduka Eya.

“He was rescued unhurt by the police operatives following an operation carried out in a forest along Enugu-Abakiliki Expressway; one suspect was arrested.

“A locally made gun was recovered from him,’’ he said.

Amaraizu said that the suspect was currently helping the police operatives in their investigations.

“The rescued academician and statesman has been re-united with his family while manhunt is on for other suspects involved in the abduction,’’ he said.

Eya was a former Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, an umbrella body of the Igbo socio-cultural group spanning nine states in the country.

He was also commissioner for education in the old Anambra.
