Security Challenges in Nigeria  has Necessitated Self Examination mechanism for optimal performance – CDI, Maj Gen Adebayo

Against the backdrop of daunting, extremists and destructive security challenges plaguing the country, the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), Major Gen Samuel Adebayo has said time has come for self examination mechanism by the military towards attaining optimal performance.

His words, “Considering the extant security challenges the country is facing, the need to put together a self examination mechanism, in line with global best practices to ensure optimal performance evaluation has become necessary”.

Adebayo made this known while welcoming participants to the DIA’s Maiden Retreat with the topic “Contemporary Threat Assessment and National Development: The Role of DIA in the Nigerian Intelligence Architecture”.

The CDI said, “This  Retreat will undoubtedly serve as an avenue to identify new lessons and challenges, discuss modalities of overcoming such challenges and re-strategize for the future.

“The Retreat was necessitated by the observation that since the inception of the Agency, no platform has been created for institutional reflection on its activities with a view to measuring the attainment of its core mandate.

“At the end of the day, we would have gained significant insights on how to reposition the Agency towards a more solid pedestal, in addressing the myriad security challenges bedeviling our dear country and to also achieve sustainable national security growth.

“The need for a continuous reappraisal of our strategies, operational tactics and methods of intelligence gathering in order to efficiently deal with our security challenges is therefore paramount.

“This forum will no doubt provide the opportunity to tap from the vast experience of the former Chiefs of Defence Intelligence and past directors of the agency.

Continuing Gen Adebayo said, “I would like to seize this opportunity to register our sincere appreciation to the Federal Government, the Ministry of Defence and Defence Headquarters for the financial and institutional support extended to the Agency.

“The only way to reciprocate this gesture is for the Agency to remain alive to its duties and be at the forefront of the government effort to proactively identify and deal with emerging threats that portend grave danger to our dear nation.”
