Reform of MOD/Armed Forces of Nigeria: FG Advisory Committee visits Chief of Army Staff

The Federal Government Advisory Committee on the Reform of the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Nigeria on Wednesday visited the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Faruk Yahaya to deliberate on ways of further improving on recommendations of bequething a modernized military to Nigeria.

Chairman of the committee and former Chief of Army Staff, Major General Alwali Kazir (rtd), who was represented by Lt. Gen AK Akale (rtd), former Commandant of NDA, disclosed thus, “We are here as members of the implementation advisory committee on reform of the ministry of Defence and the armed forces of Nigeria.

“This committee was put in place by the Minister of Defence. The various services made their imput and sent to the committee. The committee concluded their work, made recommendations and sent to Mr. President. Mr. President approved and sent it to the ministry of Defence.

“The minister then sent this committee to take the recommendations to the various services to have a final look, peruse and make comments as regards implementation.

“We are here because we have not recieved any observation from the Chief of Army Staff who will be the one to carry out the implementation. So we came to find out from you since you are on ground, what observations you have.

Gen Akale continued, “The aim and purpose of the report is for the good of the country. It is for the good of the services. It is for the good of the ministry of Defence. We want the best for the country. We need to carry the Chief of Army Staff along. That is why we are here”.

In his response, the COAS, Lt. Gen Yahaya said with the calibre of members of the committee including a former Chief of Army Staff, 3 Lt. Generals including Lt. Gen Akale, Chikadibia Obiakor, Lamidi Adeosun, former Chiefs of Operations, Policy and Plans, Administration, Field Commanders, GOCs, Ditectors of Military Intelligence and Brigade Commanders and a former Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence among others, he was sure something good will come out of the report.

“I believe that all that should be there will be there. We have no fears about what the committee will recommend. The old, the not too old and the present are in the committee plan. So we commend you for work you are doing.”

Others present at the occasion were former Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence, Turaki Aliyu Ismail, retired Major Gen Ahmed Tijani, Major Gen AM Jibrin (rtd), Major Gen AT Jibril (rtd), Major Gen Mshelbwala (rtd), Major Gen Umaru (rtd), Retired AVM Dick Irunagbere, AVM Wonah, Rear Admiral Ajani (rtd), Rear Admiral Muhammed (rtd), Retired Brig Gen Temlong, Group Captan SD Shehu (rtd).

Also present were Principsl Staff Officers and Directors at Army headquarters.
