The federal government has extended the NIN-SIM-DATA registration exercise from April 6 to May 5, 2021.
This followed that anxiety and public apprehension over inability of many phone users to enroll for NIN-SIM Data registration before deadline fixed for Tuesday, April 6, 2021.
Recall that earlier directive to telecommunications operators to block all SIM cards not registered with NIN by the end of 2020 was given by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in December last year.
This deadline was later shifted to January 19, 2021, and then again February 9, and later to April 6, following a deluge of public outcry and complaints by majority of Nigerians about the chaotic situation at the registration centers caused by the deadline.
Consequently, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) announced on Friday, April 2 that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved another one-month extension beyond the April 6 terminal date.
The Ministerial Task Force on the data linkage however reached the decision at its meeting on Thursday, April 1.
“The request for the extension was presented to President Muhammadu Buhari and he endorsed it,” a joint statement by the NCC and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) said.e
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, said at a media briefing on Thursday, that over 51 million people have been assigned NIN, a significant improvement since December’s announcement.
He urged public cooperation with the government to ensure the functionality of a central database in a bid to improve national security. NNL.
