Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya has commended the existing cordial relationship between Nigeria and Turkey particularly as it relates of military cooperation and hardware development even as he noted that the Nigerian Army is willing to tap from the experience of Turkey who have the experience of fighting terrorism.
Speaking when the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Hidaya Bayraktar visited Army headquarters, Abuja, the COAS who said he visited Turkey sometime ago, noted that the Nigerian Army have a lot of Cobra Armoured Personnel Tanks that has served creditably in the various theaters of operation but were now experiencing ‘wear and tear’.
“We have been to Turkey with officials of our Defence Industries Corporation, and elements of the Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Airforce. We have good understanding with the Land Forces of Turkey”.
“During my visit to Turkey with my delegation, we were shown factories and the processes. The Chief of Army Staff of Turkey accompanied me to Ankara. We have made arrangement on how to fast track the issues of the hardware like the Cobra, using the country to country policy.
“We also discussed other areas of interest particularly training, Air Defence equipment, exchange of Command and Staff College training and others. It is a complete package. We intend to cash in on the goodwill existing between Nigeria and Turkey, as well as the interaction of your visit” he told the Ambassador.
Earlier, Ambassador Bayraktar said since his posting Nigeria four and half months ago, he had been interacting with MDAs noting that he was happy to be at Army headquarters.
He expressed readiness of Turkey to work with Nigeria, particularly the Nigerian Army tackle security challenges confronting the country saying, “We can various cooperation agreements in this regard if you feel it is important and necessary”.
“We have faced similar challenges that Nigeria is facing like terrorism. As we have gone through these same challenges, we are ready to assist the Nigerian Army and even work together to overcome these challenges.
Present at the occasion were the Chief of Policy and Plans, Army, Major Gen AB Omozojie, Chief of Training, Major Gen AB Ibrahim, Chief of Operations, Army, Major Gen OT Akinjobi, Chief of Technology and Innovation, Major Gen Charles Ofoche, Chief of Accounts and Budget, Major Gen AA Adesope, Chief of Army Standard and Evaluation, Major Gen TA Ataguba, Provost Mashall, Army, Major Gen OR Aiyenigba and the Acting Chief of Military Intelligence, Brigadier Gen Salihu.
