Army Council Approves 8th Division in Sokoto, North West.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen. Yusuf Buratai has disclosed that the Nigerian Army Council has approved the establishment of the 8th Army Division in Sokoto.

He disclosed this in Sokoto on Sunday when he paid condolence visit on the Governor of Sokoto state, Aminu Tambuwal over the death of late Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki.

The COAS however said that the officers and men that would be posted to the new Division were currently operating in the Northeast.

According to Buratai, “As soon the security situation in that region is fully stabilized, the Division will move to Sokoto. The move is part of efforts to provide sustainable peace and unity of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Army is fully committed to ensuring this.”

Commending Tambuwal for his support to the 1 Brigade and other security agencies in Sokoto, the COAS also commended the governor for the existing relationship between the Army and the people of the state.

Burutai reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Army and the Federal Government to ensuring sustainable national security, peace and unity.

He described the late Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki as a national icon whose legacies would remain indelible.

Giving details of the new division, acting Director, Army Public relations, Col Sani Usman said, the division was recently approved in the Nigerian Army order of battle (ORBAT) that created new formations and units, and other establishments such as 6 division, 8 division, 16 Brigade and some battalions.

Others are Nigerian army resource center and the Nigerian army war College.

Usman said, “Although the headquarters of 8 Task force Division is in Monguno, North East, it will be relocated to later to North West.

“Already, the new 6 division has taken off, same for the 16 brigade in the Niger Delta, while others would gradually come on board.

“There is also plan to establish an additional Army Training Depot in the South East. The essence is to cover some noted existing gaps”, he said.

Responding, Tambuwal commended the Army for establishing a Division and two Command Secondary Schools in Sokoto and Shagari.

Also pledging to continue to support the military as well as other security agencies in the state, Tambuwal further commended the Nigerian Army for its  efforts to restore peace in the Northeast and other parts of Nigeria.
